Why touch controls make or break a mobile game
After reviewing dozens of games I've become convinced that control design matters more than graphics on mobile. A gorgeous game with a cramped virtual stick is a chore, and a plain-looking one with perfect taps is a joy.
The best games give you options. Racing titles that offer tilt, wheel, and tap zones let you find what fits your hands and your commute. The worst lock you into one scheme and hope it clicks.
A rule I keep seeing hold true: don't show a button until it's useful. Adventure games that only reveal the action prompt when there's something to interact with keep the screen clean and the world immersive.
If you're a developer reading this, test on a phone one size bigger than yours. Thumbs don't reach the same way on every device, and a lot of frustration comes from buttons placed for the designer's hands, not the player's.
